UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan while heading to the company’s investor conference. The NYPD has described the incident as a “premeditated, targeted attack.”
Surveillance footage revealed the suspect waiting for Thompson before launching the ambush, using a silenced firearm. Officials noted that the gun initially jammed but was quickly cleared, allowing the attacker to continue firing. Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The assailant fled the scene on foot and later escaped using a rental bike.
Investigators recovered evidence from the scene and reported that the suspect wore a black hoodie and carried a gray backpack. While the motive remains uncertain, Thompson’s wife disclosed that he had received threats in the past. A $10,000 reward has been announced for any information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Thompson, a prominent figure in the healthcare industry with a career spanning more than 20 years, was deeply mourned by UnitedHealth Group, which expressed profound grief and committed to aiding the investigation.
