Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated the attack occurred as Thompson walked to an investor conference. An unidentified gunman approached from behind and fired multiple rounds, striking him in the back and calf.
Thompson was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West Hospital. Authorities described the attack as “premeditated and targeted.” Surveillance footage showed the gunman waiting before ambushing Thompson, then continuing to fire even as he fell.
Investigators found discharged shell casings, live rounds, and a cellphone at the scene. The firearm, believed to have a silencer, briefly jammed during the shooting. The suspect, wearing a black hoodie and carrying a gray backpack, fled on foot, switched to a rental bike, and was last seen entering Central Park.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, said he had been receiving threats, though specifics are unclear. Police are working to determine a motive. Crime Stoppers has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
