Urgent Warning: Keep Windows Shut to Stop the Spider from Entering Homes
UK residents are being advised to keep windows closed around the clock as the False Widow spider, a venomous relative of the Black Widow, enters peak mating season.
Dr. Tom Elwood, an arachnologist, says there’s no need for panic—only sensible precautions. “August is when male spiders roam in search of a mate,” he explained. “They can enter through open windows, vents, or even drains.”
While not deadly, the False Widow can bite with wasp-like pain, causing burning, swelling, and fever. It is one of the few UK spiders known to regularly bite humans, and sightings inside homes are becoming more common.
Medical reports have linked its venom to skin irritation and, in some cases, more serious reactions. BBC News has documented incidents where victims suffered prolonged discomfort, highlighting the need for vigilance.
Experts recommend several measures: keep windows shut day and night; clean window frames weekly to prevent web-building; seal gaps around doors, vents, and pipes; use peppermint oil as a natural deterrent; clear webs frequently; and trim plants touching your home.
“Spiders are already active,” Dr. Elwood warned. “They climb walls, slip through vents, and squeeze into the smallest cracks.”
With climate change extending mating seasons and increasing indoor sightings, experts stress that taking preventive action now can help avoid unpleasant encounters later.
