US issues urgent ‘do not travel’
The U.S. government has issued a “do not travel” advisory for certain regions in Colombia and the entire country of Burkina Faso due to heightened risks of violence, terrorism, and kidnapping. In Colombia, areas such as Arauca, Cauca, and the Colombia-Venezuela border are considered highly dangerous, with common occurrences of armed robbery, murder, and terrorist activity. The U.S. State Department warns that even American citizens who enter without proper visas may face terrorism charges and lengthy detainment. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling to these regions.
Burkina Faso, a West African nation with significant development challenges, has also been flagged with a strong warning. The State Department advises against all travel due to widespread threats from terrorist groups, frequent kidnappings, and general criminal activity. These risks extend even to the capital, Ouagadougou, and are especially severe in the Sahel and East regions. Because of the security situation, the U.S. government has limited ability to assist citizens outside the capital, and American staff are restricted from traveling beyond that area. Travelers are urged to avoid both countries for their own safety.
