Vance: ‘Emergency’ Exists Over Drug Ingredients, Supply Chain
During a Thursday interview with Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly, Vice President J.D. Vance defended former President Donald Trump’s tough tariff strategy, calling it a response to a national emergency involving U.S. supply chains.
Vance claimed that some foreign governments, including adversaries, are threatening to cut off vital goods such as pharmaceutical ingredients and manufacturing parts. He said this threat qualifies as a national emergency.
The interview followed a legal battle over Trump’s use of tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). A trade court initially ruled that Trump didn’t have the authority to impose them, but a federal appeals court later allowed the tariffs to temporarily resume.
Vance argued that during national emergencies, the president has wide authority to act in the country’s best interest, especially in matters of foreign policy and economic protection.
He stressed that the president can take action to defend U.S. industries and consumers from unfair foreign trade tactics, regardless of ongoing legal debates.
According to Vance, ignoring these threats to supply chains would risk U.S. resilience and national security. He insisted the situation demands strong presidential action.
Trump echoed Vance’s stance on Truth Social, criticizing the court’s initial ruling and calling on the Supreme Court to restore full presidential power to manage emergency economic situations.
