Vatican reveals what
Vice President JD Vance visited Vatican City on Saturday, April 19, for meetings with top officials, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher. As a Catholic convert, Vance held what were described as “cordial” discussions, though there were clear differences in opinion, particularly on topics like immigration and foreign aid. The Vatican has historically taken a cautious stance toward the Trump administration, especially regarding cuts to international support and its approach to Ukraine and Gaza. While Pope Francis, recovering from pneumonia, did not meet with Vance, the Vatican released a statement detailing their conversations.
The talks focused on global conflicts, humanitarian crises, and the importance of helping migrants, refugees, and prisoners. The Vatican emphasized the hope for ongoing cooperation between the Catholic Church and the U.S. government, particularly in serving vulnerable populations. Prior to Vance’s visit, Cardinal Parolin remarked that the current U.S. administration’s approach significantly differs from traditional Western norms. Pope Francis also indirectly responded to Vance’s immigration stance, emphasizing Christian love as inclusive and boundless, referencing the parable of the Good Samaritan. Despite criticism, Vance continues to support his views, referring to himself as a “Baby Catholic.”
