What Do Yellow or Red Dots
You might not have noticed them, but the tiny red and yellow dots on your car tires are important indicators for proper installation and performance. Due to slight imperfections in all tires and wheels, these dots help ensure balance and smoother rides.
The red dot shows the tire’s high point, often aligned with the wheel’s low point to reduce the need for balancing weights. Sometimes it also marks the tire’s heaviest spot. The yellow dot indicates the tire’s lightest point and is typically matched with the valve stem—the heaviest part of the wheel. When both dots are present, the red one takes priority for better ride quality.
Tire balance is vital for vehicle handling and even wear. Over time, imbalance can result from under/overinflation, potholes, or prolonged parking. Regular tire rotation every 5,000 to 8,000 miles helps maintain balance.
White dots also appear occasionally but lack a standardized meaning and vary by manufacturer. Many drivers don’t see these dots because they’re cleaned or wear off after factory installation. Understanding these marks can extend tire life and improve driving safety.
