Dreams about deceased loved ones often carry deeper emotional significance than we realize. Grief affects people differently—some cry openly, while others withdraw or suppress their feelings. However, dreams frequently serve as a subconscious way to process loss.
Patrick McNamara, a neurology professor at Boston University, describes visitation dreams, where the deceased appear alive and healthy, providing comfort and emotional healing. McNamara’s personal experience with such dreams led him to reflect on life beyond death, despite his scientific skepticism.
Research supports this. A 2014 study found that grief dreams are common and help with recovery. Themes include seeing loved ones at peace, reliving memories, or receiving reassuring messages. In a 2016 study, 70% of participants dreamed of deceased loved ones, and 67% reported increased belief in an afterlife.
Psychologist Jennifer Shorter notes four key features of visitation dreams: the deceased appear younger or healthier, express well-being, convey mental messages, and evoke feelings of peace.
