When Hidey was found on the streets, it was clear she was in serious distress. Cats are often seen as independent, but some breeds, like Hidey, require regular grooming. Years of neglect had left her matted and unkempt, as her owner, struggling with Alzheimer’s, could no longer care for her. Rescuers initially mistook her for an alien-like creature due to her tangled fur.
Paul Russell, who discovered her, exclaimed, “My god, this is a cat!” At 14 years old, Hidey was rescued by a caring couple and taken to the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center.
Her condition highlighted the challenges elderly pet owners face, especially when health issues prevent them from properly caring for their animals. CEO Dan Rossi stressed the need for support for aging pet owners. Hidey’s matted fur was so severe it resembled dreadlocks.
After a medical team shaved her fur, Hidey was adopted by a family member. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of helping elderly pet owners and ensuring their pets receive the care they need.
