Why health experts are shocked by
Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer, confirmed on May 18. The cancer has a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) and has metastasized to the bone. Though the disease is hormone-sensitive and potentially manageable, health professionals have expressed surprise at how advanced it is, suggesting it likely developed over years. Dr. Howard Forman of Yale questioned why it wasn’t detected earlier, noting that a high Gleason score typically follows elevated PSA levels, which should have been monitored regularly. Dr. Steven Quay added that such cancer usually progresses slowly and is easily caught with screenings, although rare cases can develop quickly, especially in older men.
Biden has a history of health issues and has been open about them. He previously had a benign polyp and a skin cancer removed. His health had been a concern during his presidency and 2024 campaign. He eventually withdrew from the race, passing the nomination to Kamala Harris, who lost to Donald Trump. Biden has also prioritized cancer awareness following the death of his son Beau from a brain tumor in 2015. The recent diagnosis has reignited scrutiny over his health and the timing of the announcement.
