Zohran Mamdani had hidden Disney movie cameo 9 years ago
Zohran Mamdani is making headlines after being confirmed as New York City’s next mayor, winning the 2025 election by a landslide.
At just 34 years old, Mamdani becomes the youngest NYC mayor in more than a century — and the first Muslim and South Asian American to hold the position. His victory margin was so large that he received more votes than all other candidates, including Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, combined.
A year ago, few had even heard his name. But at his triumphant rally outside the Brooklyn Paramount, Mamdani celebrated the city’s immigrant spirit, declaring, “New York will remain a city of immigrants — built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and now led by an immigrant.”
He also took direct aim at President Donald Trump, boldly saying, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
The new mayor’s background is just as remarkable. The son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani once worked in Hollywood himself — serving as assistant director and music supervisor on Disney’s Queen of Katwe (2016), where he even appeared briefly as “Bookie Student.”
He also co-wrote and performed a rap song, #1 Spice, for the film’s soundtrack under his artist name, Young Cardamom. Notably, he once convinced his mother to decline directing a Harry Potter film, urging her to make The Namesake instead.
Now, as he steps into office, Mamdani faces high expectations — and a tense relationship with President Trump, whom he has openly vowed to challenge.
